Wild Horse State Recreation Area

Located 67 miles north of Elko on State Route 225. Wild Horse Reservoir was rated one of the countries top lakes in the Spring 1997 issue of Family Camping Magazine. The State Recreation Area encompassess approximately 120 acres on the northeast shore of Wild Horse Reservoir. Mountain ranges surrounding the Reservoir make it a beautiful outdoor recreation destination. Due to the size and set-up of the Reservoir, it seldom, if ever, feels crowded.

CLIMATE: Mild summer temperatures make it a favorite recreation area. Winters bring snow and ice and roads are usually maintained but may be poor until snow plows arrive.

CAMPING: Elevation 6200ft/use May-Nov/33 fee camping sites with picnic tables, some have shade covers, fire rings, grills/3 fee group camp sites/6 fee picnic sites with a grill and table/6 restrooms/2 showers/water/tents & trailers, maximum length 24ft.

OFF ROAD VEHICLES: The majority of Elko County is classified as "open" to off-road vehicle use. Opportunities vary from well maintained gravel roads to hundreds of miles of primitive, back country "two-tracks". There are some Wilderness Study Areas and the areas within the Special Recreation Management Areas have a "limited" ORV (Off Road Vehicle) designation and all vehicles are required to stay on existing roads and two-track routes-in these areas NO cross country travel is permitted.

BOATING: Fee boat launch with 12 parking spaces.

FISHING: Very popular fishing spot for locals and travelers alike. More information to follow.

ICE FISHING: Winter months this is a favorite ice fishing destination. In February, the annual Wild Horse Ice Fishing Tournament draws people from as far away as Reno, Las Vegas, and Salt Lake City.

HUNTING: Wild Horse provides convenient camping access for people hunting in the northern portions of Areas 6 and 7.

WINTER RECREATION: Snowmobiling, cross-country skiing are VERY popular here, there are many many miles of places to go and play. It is wide open and accessible.
